Strike Rate, Precisely
A batter's strike rate is runs scored divided by balls faced, multiplied by 100. Score 45 from 30 balls and the strike rate is 150.00 — you are scoring 1.5 runs per delivery.
What it measures is tempo, and nothing else. It does not know whether you were batting in the powerplay against a swinging new ball or at the death against a bowler defending six runs. It does not know whether you got out. It answers one narrow question — how fast were the runs — and it answers it well.
Confusingly, bowlers have a strike rate too, and it means something completely different: balls bowled per wicket taken. For a bowler, a lower number is better. Seeing 18.4 next to a bowler's name and 148.2 next to a batter's is not an inconsistency; they are different statistics that share a name.
Batting Average in T20
Batting average is runs divided by dismissals — not divided by innings. Not-out innings add runs to the numerator without adding to the denominator, which is why a finisher who is frequently unbeaten can carry a flattering-looking average.
In Test cricket, average is close to the whole story, because occupying the crease is the job. In T20 it is a supporting figure. A T20 innings has three distinct phases, and a batter's numbers mean different things in each.
- Powerplay (overs 1–6). Only two fielders outside the circle. Scoring is easier, but the ball is new and hard. High strike rates here are expected.
- Middle overs (7–15). The field spreads, spinners operate, and boundaries dry up. This is where dot balls accumulate and pressure is built.

- Economy rate — runs conceded per over. In T20 this is usually the primary measure of a bowler's value.
